Many coaches help you to focus on setting and achieving personal and business goals. We at Executive GPS – Coaching™ believe this is a good start. However, we know there is much more to coaching than simply clarifying goals, evaluating actions and observing outcomes.
Based on my expertise in emotional intelligence business development and, we have found that there are many triggers in the mind that causes you not abide this reasoning by no matter how important your goal is. We help you figure out why you are not doing something rather than on the specifics of what to do. We help you identify and work on blind spots, your resistance, and the gaps in your perspective. Once you see your situation clearly, you know what you need to do to get the outcomes you want.

For example, one of my clients was a Chief Executive Officer of a major Association in the U.S. She asked me to help her with getting a position for a larger association. Our coach’s response was, “You have created a very successful career. I don’t buy that you don’t know how to take those skills to a larger association. What I want to know is what is either stopping you from doing this or rerouting your focus.” The discussion then turned to how she was losing her motivation in her current role but didn’t know what was next for her career. The next step was to start working on a plan for her future, which she then committed to do. In the end, she developed a plan which helped her to find another position with a large association and doubling her salary within six months.

This form of coaching is not psychotherapy, but it still deals with the present and what it will take to move forward. If this were, we might dive deeper into what her fears were regarding the future and if this was a consistent pattern that needed to be investigated further.

We never assume something is wrong when coaching. We assume our clients need to expand their awareness to make the right choices for them. They need a coach to help them uncover what they are doing and the impact. They need to be asked the hard questions they have dodged sometimes for years. In layman’s terms, they need a partner who will help them think so that they can see what else is on the horizon for them to do.
